BSL-3 Lab
The laboratory contains cutting edge equipment allowing advanced molecular-based and cell-based screens, as well as molecular and cell biology studies using live pathogens. In addition to standard equipment, these include an automated fluorescence microscope system (ScanR) equipped with a live imaging incubator, high NA objectives, filter wheels, online image analysis, a robotic station, an ultracentrifuge, a gradient maker and fractionator with inline UV and fluorescence cells, a plate reader, a NanoDrop, and additional equipment. See below for more details.
Olympus, Scanning Microscope IX-83
Automated imaging for accurate and efficient experiments designed for automated time lapse multidimensional and versatile fluorescence imaging and easy experiment setup. The system facilitates effortless data collection and seamless acquisition of panoramic, multichannel images.
Olympus, IX73 Microscope
A microscope designed for efficient routine testing and other tasks such as observing cultures with DAPI, GFP and mCherry fluorescent signals
Liquid Handling Robot Tecan, Freedom Evo
Eight-channels liquid handling robot. Can be used for automated liquid preparation such as drug dilutions or cell cultures treatment.
Tecan, Spark Microplate Reader
The Spark microplate reader is a multi-mode reader designed for detection for genomics, proteomics, microbiology, cell-based assays, and drug discovery. The reader measures absorbance in the 200-1000nm range, fluorescence, luminescence. It also has temperature-controlled chamber operating between 18-42ᵒC.
For complete Spark capabilities see Manufacturer Website
Beckman Coulter, Optima XPN-80 Ultracentrifuge
Maximum speed of 80,000rpm (548,300xg) and maximum capacity of 1500 ml.
BioComp, Gradient Forming & Fractionating
A newly developed hybrid instrument performs both gradient mixing (by the Gradient Master™) and fractionation (by the Piston Gradient Fractionator™). BioComp Gradient Former (e.g. sucrose, glycerol, optiprep etc) and Fractionator, comprises a UV and fluorescence flow cell and an automatic fraction collector.
ThermoFisher, NanoDrop One
NanoDrop One measures absorbance in wide spectral range of 190-850nm and can be used for detection of:
- Peptides (205 nm)
- DNA and RNA (260 nm)
- Purified protein (280 nm)
- Toxicology assays and industrial dyes (490 nm)
- Gold nanoparticles (520 nm)
- Colorimetric protein assays (BCA 562 nm, Bradford 595 nm, Modified Lowry 650 nm, Pierce 660 660 nm)
- Optical density measurements (600 nm)
For complete Spark capabilities see Manufacturer Website
The BSL-3 Unit is also equipped with basic instruments such as: refrigerated centrifuges, heating block with shaking, a scale, an oven, refrigerators, -20ᵒC and -80ᵒC freezers, incubators with CO2 and incubators with CO2 + O2 controls, biological safety cabinets and chemical safety cabinet for fixation, anesthesia and dissections. A double-sided autoclave is also stationed in the unit for decontamination and sterilization.
